Dr. Hugo Wai Leung MAK is currently a Visiting Faculty at HKUST and a Lecturer at CUHK. He is also a Junior Fellow of The Academy of Education Excellence (AEE). His core research interests include Computational Data Science, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Analytics and Satellite Informatics, as well as the use of Machine Learning algorithms in Environmental Retrieval, Smart and Sustainable City Development. He obtained his B.Sc. Degree in Mathematics and Physics (with minor in Liberal Studies), and Ph.D. Degree in Mathematics (with Scientific Computation concentration). He has acquired extensive experience as a guest editor of numerous journals related to Applied Science, Geoinformatics and Data Analytics, serves as an organizing and scientific committee member of different academic conferences and science education events, and has actively participated in several international satellite missions related to environmental informatics, like GEMS and CINDI-3. Some of his recent highlighted awards and honors include: The 14th Epsilon Fund Award (2019); School of Science Postgraduate Research Excellence Award, HKUST (2019); Departmental Research Output Prize, HKU (2021); Young Scientist of the 1st Inaugural Hong Kong Laureate Forum (2023); Remote Sensing Outstanding Reviewer Award (2024); AEE Junior Fellow (2025). He is also the recipient of many Travel Grant Awards from 2016 onwards, and has been granted the Internationalisation Faculty Mobility Scheme Award (2024-25). He always tries his utmost to maintain close connections and collaborations with industrial partners, NGOs and top institutions worldwide for conducting practical research projects that could alleviate real-world social concerns and establish sustainable future city, with the aid of latest technology and computational frameworks.
